Production Details / Press Releases

After Tears investigates the mourning process and the strategies people use in order to cope with the loss of their loved ones. The South African tradition that you should return the spirit to its rightful destination is difficult and leads to inner conflict. Contrary feelings are summoned up to chase away the pain. At the same time it is necessary, within this process, to look at the future. In his choreography questions are posed about personal origins and space as well as that of human beings in general. His focus is on traditions conflicting with changes.

Sello Pesa is Artistic Director of Ntsoana Contemporary Dance Theatre. He toured South Africa and Europe with the Soweto Dance Theatre and received a scholarship to study at the Northern Contemporary Dance School in Leeds after which he co-founded Inzalo Dance Theatre before spending four years collaborating with French choreographer Valerie Berger in Reunion Island. Sello’s works have toured internationally – Same but Different won Sanga II African Contemporary Dance Competition in Madagascar and toured the USA. He has been commissioned to create works for Yorkshire Dance, the American Dance Festival, the Dance Umbrella, Arts Alive and the Small World Festival (Russia). He is a highly sought after teacher and has conducted choreographic workshops in South Africa, Russia, Berlin and in India. Sello worked with Carlos Pez on the Cross Currents / Sharpsharp Activities Projects which took place in South Africa and Berlin, 2008-2010 and performed his solo After Tears in Berlin, Amsterdam and in India. Sello enjoys exploring new ways of working and pushing his boundaries; this led to a collaboration with Peter van Heerden in creating the controversial „Time of the Small Berries“ in 2010 and the creation of Inhabitant with Vaughn Sadie in 2011.
