The Egyptian-Irish poet, dancer, performer and media artist Mona Gamil is an active member of the up-and-coming performance and dance scene in Egypt. Mona Gamil lives in Egypt and Ireland, but is not concerned with her dual identity, nor with questions of intercultural reality. In her work, the complexity of Kairo’s current history manifests, but she does not seek a representation of this story. “Safe Art Practice” is a guide that introduces a new genre, a practice that guarantees bubbly ideas, artistic success and the affection of the international audience. No politics and no provocations – promised!

“Aunt Safety’s Practical Guide to Safe Art Practice” was presented by Marie Al Fajr as part of a double presentation (curator: Adham Hafez) together with “Shagarat Mussafira (Travelling Trees)”.

This double performance from Cairo brings together two highly different artists in an evening of critical condensation. The contemporary dance of Cairo is as complex as the population of the city and its history; Postcolonial criticism, current problems, radical physicality and specific political positions, as well as criticism of the conventional formats of the dance festivals. To give the range of contemporary dance from Cairo one evening is, of course, as impossible as reducing the history of the city to a few monolithic narratives.

Die ägyptisch-irische Dichterin, Tänzerin, Performerin und Medienkünstlerin Mona Gamil ist ein aktives Mitglied der aufstrebenden Performance- und Tanzszene Ägyptens. Mona Gamil lebt in Ägypten und Irland, beschäftigt sich in ihrer Arbeit jedoch weder mit ihrer doppelten Identität, noch mit Fragen interkultureller Realität. In ihrem Werk manifestiert sich die Komplexität von Kairos aktueller Geschichte, doch strebt sie nicht nach einer Repräsentation dieser Geschichte. “Safe Art Practice” ist ein Leitfaden, der in ein neues Genre einführt, eine Praxis, die sprudelnde Ideen, künstlerischen Erfolg und die Zuneigung des internationalen Publikums garantiert. “Aunt Safety’s Practical Guide to Safe Art Practice” wurde im Rahmen einer Doppelvorstellung (Kurator: Adham Hafez) zusammen mit “Shagarat Mussafira (Travelling Trees)” von Marie Al Fajr gezeigt.

Diese Doppelvorstellung aus Kairo bringt zwei höchst unterschiedliche Künstlerinnen in einem Abend der kritischen Verdichtungen zusammen. Der zeitgenössische Tanz Kairos ist so komplex wie die Bevölkerung der Stadt und deren Geschichte; in ihm fließen postkoloniale Kritik, weltweit aktuelle Problemstellungen, radikale Körperlichkeit und spezifische politische Positionen zusammen, sowie nicht zuletzt auch eine Kritik an den konventionellen Formaten der Tanzfestivals. An einem Abend die Bandbreite des zeitgenössischen Tanzes aus Kairos zu geben ist natürlich so unmöglich, wie die Geschichte der Stadt auf wenige monolithische Narrative zu reduzieren.
