What lies on the reverse side of the familiar? Robyn Orlin is always looking at gures, symbols and emblems of power that originate without exception from Western culture, so as to dissect them and reveal their hidden aspects. In her new solo the South African choreographer turns her attention to the Sun King, Louis XIV. Together with Benjamin Pech, Danseur Étoile of the Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris, and the musician Loris Barrucand, she examines the first dancer in the French kingdom and inventor of classical ballet, who put dance in the service of his politics.
Robyn Orlin (*1955, Johannesburg) studied at the London School of Contemporary Dance. With the aid of a Fulbright scholarship she gained an MA in fine art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She then created her works in South Africa, and is well known for reflecting the difficult realities of her country in them. Through the use of various media, such as text, video and objects, she examines a particular theatrical reality, which enables her to find a unique choreographic vocabulary. Her artistic works have been shown at international festivals and venues, for example at the Festival d’Automne in Paris and the Festival d’Avignon, in Liège, Brussels and Luxemburg. Robyn Orlin lives in Berlin, and was previously a guest of Tanz im August in 2002.
