The Sea Within

Tanz im August | HAU Hebbel am Ufer (HAU2)

Production Details / Press Releases

Lisbeth Gruwez has made a name for herself with unusual, precise choreographies. In her new piece, “The Sea Within” the Belgian dancer and choreographer no longer wishes to bring order into chaos but to allow chaos to create its own order. Together with the composer and musician Maarten Van Cauwenberghe, Gruwez founded the collective Voetvolk, which was invited to Tanz im August in 2016 with “AH | HA”. The group now returns with its latest work, a contemporary ritual in which the ‘we’ embraces the ‘I’ and ten female dancers dissolve into a large, breathing landscape.

Voetvolk (“Rank and File”) is a contemporary dance and performance group. It was founded in 2007 in Belgium by the dancer and choreographer Lisbeth Gruwez and the musician and composer Maarten Van Cauwenberghe, who met in Jan Fabre’s artistic laboratory. Their work is a continuing dialogue between physical and auditory movement, which guide one another so as to achieve an acoustic and visible symbiosis. Nine artistic works have been created to date, and have been shown at the Festival d’Avignon, the Guggenheim in Bilbao and the Venice Biennale.
