6: THE SQUARE

Tanz im August 2016 | HAU Hebbel am Ufer (HAU2)

Production Details / Press Releases

In “6: THE SQUARE” – the second part of her Bauhaus trilogy focussing on the elementary geometric shapes of circle, square and triangle – Beutler invites us to see the world through a square filter. Eight dancers aim to master complex spatial dance patterns based on the American square dance and Asian precision walking, while an actress embodies different voices from individual confessions to populist speeches such as they dominate our times. In four scenes, “6: THE SQUARE” demonstrates the ceaseless endeavour of humanity to bring order to what cannot be grasped.

Mesmerizing movement patterns, compelling beats composed by Gary Shepherd and luminous squares in a lighting design by Minna Tiikkainen are all co-players in a performance in which ‘the square’ shows itself with all its facets: from calm simplicity to the menace of fascism. Choreographer Nicole Beutler makes visual theatre; her works are philosophical, poetic, urgent and always permeated with a subtle humour.

Choreographer and theatre maker Nicole Beutler (born in Munich in 1969) lives and works in Amsterdam. After studies of German Literature and Fine Arts at Münster and München Arts Academies, she came to study Dance and Choreography at the SNDO in Amsterdam. In 2009 Nicole set up her company NBprojects. A regular player at Frascati Theater and Stadsschouwburg in Amsterdam, it is touring internationally through dance and theater festivals. Nicole’s work is interdisciplinary, situated on the threshold of dance, performance, theatre and visual arts. Her latest works include: “LIEFDESVERKLARING”, with six young performers in collaboration with playwright Magne van den Berg and youth production house fABULEUS, “5: ECHO” in collaboration with ICKamsterdam, “SHIROKURO”, a collaboration with concert pianist Tomoko Mukaiyama and lighting designer Jean Kalman, “ANTIGONE”, a collaboration with puppet-theatermaker Ulrike Quade, “2: DIALOGUE WITH LUCINDA”, or the solo “1: SONGS”, among others. Nicole’s work was awarded several prices: In 2015 “LIEFDESVERKLARING”, was selected as one of the best ten productions of the last season by the Flemish Theaterfestival, as was “1: SONGS” in 2010, for which she was awarded the prestigious VSCD Mimeprize. “SHIROKURO”, received the Dioraphte Prijs at the Dutch Dance Days 2014. For the sum of her activities Nicole was also nominated for the prestigious Amsterdamse Kunstprijs in 2014.
