The frenzied hero would be the one who knows how to live the present moment in all fullness and appreciate what happens in the moment that it happens.
(Giordano Bruno)
For Katerina Andreou balancing on the threshold between autonomy and authority is an obsession. Her work became focused on choreography that calls into question the mechanism of instant decision-making: the illusion of “free will”, no doubt staged, but which produces a constant diving into action. An illusion of freedom. A kind of fierce is a solo, which observes its solitary nature and tries to enjoy it. It seeks to create spaces where concepts of freedom, autonomy, audacity, courage and determination could emerge as a phenomenon beyond intentions, and it plays with (and thus thwarts) these ideas.
My rules, my manipulation, my game, my struggle: What is leaking, what is escaping the whole construction, is what I would call several “bites of freedom”. I wanted to make a kind of dance which plays with contrast, flirts with its own naivety, and lets both heritage and futurity slip by; a kind of dance that fights against nostalgia, regret, fear, fate, and hope; a kind of dance where everything matters and nothing is important – my own “free” dance. (Katerina Andreou)
KATERINA ANDREOU graduated from Law School and the State School of Dance. After her choreography master degree in ESSAIS (Angers), France became her base. She is one of the Panorama Artists of the DNA network and collaborated so far with DD Dorvillier, Lenio Kaklea, Dinis Machado among othes. For A Kind of Fierce she was awarded with the Prix Jardin d’Europe in 2016.
