an Accident / a Life

NO LIMITS | HAU Hebbel am Ufer (HAU1)

Production Details / Press Releases

Marc Brew and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui have joined forces for the first time to create a solo piece for the former, an artist who has been in a wheelchair since a serious accident. Based on life stories and key moments of change, the two choreographers explore what it means when everything in life suddenly turns upside down. For Marc Brew, it was the car accident that turned him from ballet dancer to paraplegic in a split second. However, it’s not only about this single moment – it’s also about the issue of how to deal with such a stroke of fate.

“an Accident / a Life” tells of vulnerability, resistance, and the idea of the body as a map of personal experiences. The internationally renowned artists attempt to find new forms of movement, questioning socially normalised images of people with disabilities. Brew’s paralysed body becomes a projection screen for many deeply human questions: What do we do when the path of life we planned suddenly changes? How much determination do we have, and can we carve out new paths as a result? What does it take for us to come closer as a society?

“an Accident / a Life” serves as a poignant reminder of the fact that life-changing moments do not necessarily dictate who we are, how experiences shape us, and how we – when we share them – can glean invaluable lessons from one another.
