Production Details / Press Releases
When you come closer, all my senses are caught by the intensity of your physical presence. When you retreat, the impact of our encounter remains. As the distance between us increases, my focus shifts from looking to imagining. The attention is bridging the space between us.
In the newly created work At Close Distance, we excavate the impossible past of a physical encounter. The performance takes its point of departure from the duet kannst du mich umdrehen, which Christina Ciupke and Nik Haffner developed in 2011. The two duets, both performed by Christina Ciupke and Ayşe Orhon, are presented in a double bill. The new work, in which two individuals are on a journey back and forth through their kinesthetic memories, is accompanied by the previous work, which is a physical confrontation of two entities working in intense proximity.
Christina Ciupke is a performer and choreographer based in Berlin. In her artistic practice she develops projects in collaboration with artists from dance and other disciplines. She maintains ongoing collaborations with the choreographers Nik Haffner and Mart Kangro, film-maker Lucy Cash, visual artist Lars Ø Ramberg, composer Boris Hauf, light-designer Mehdi Toutain-Lopez and dramaturge Igor Dobricic. From 2003 to 2004 Christina Ciupke was a guest artist at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe. In 2013 she received her M.A. in Choreography from the Amsterdam School of the Arts. Her works kannst du mich umdrehen (2011), wait and see (2012), and undo, redo and repeat (2014) tour nationally and internationally. Tanzfabrik Berlin has been Christina Ciupke’s partner in Berlin since 2014, presenting most of her recent work in the frame of their festival formats. Last year she became artist in the European apap – advancing performing arts project network. christinaciupke.com
Ayşe Orhon has worked as a performer since 2001. She has danced with Aydın Teker and Emmanuelle Huynh and has collaborated with visual artist Gülsün Orhon. She graduated from Artez (HKA) in 2001 and from the Master of Choreography program in Amsterdam (AHK), with her research Permeable Manifestations, in 2013. Orhon performed her works at diverse festivals in Europe, such as Can You Repeat? (2007), hava (2009), ÇOK (2010), folk (2011), and her latest performance thinging (2013) where audience members eventually become the only actors of the event. Since 1997, Orhon has been working in the field of movement and movement therapy. She has been a guest lecturer at CNDC Angers and at two Dance Departments in Istanbul since 2002. Certified from Stott Pilates in 2004, she has taught Pilates as a technique for post-rehabilitation and practiced movement therapy. Lately, she has been teaching and staging Cribles by Emmanuelle Hunyh, realizing it with different casts at festivals in Brazil, New York and Porto. Last but not least, trained in Classical Ottoman and Classical Western music (harp), she has an increasing interest in moving voice. ayseorhon.com
