Die Stücke “Balafon Phase” und “Senedon” sind Teil einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Konzept der Minimal Art im Kontext afrikanischer Kulturen.

Der Impuls für diese Serie die unter dem Titel “Ndogo” zusammengefasst wird, entstand aus einer Diskussion mit den ugandischen Tänzerchoreografen Michael Gagawala Kaddu und Robert Ssempijja nach einer Aufführung des Stückes “Fase” von A.T. Kersmaeker. Minimalismus als eigenes, künstlerisches Konzept ist auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent weitestgehend unbekannt. In Luganda, einer vielgesprochenen Sprache Ostafrikas gibt es z.B. keine sinnvolle Übersetzung von minimal. In Swahili müsste man auf kidogo oder ndogo = klein ausweichen um dieses Konzept zu erklären. Minimalismus und Repetition als Ausdrucksform sind dagegen überall präsent.

“Balafon Phase” ist die erste Einspielung von Steve Reichs wegweisender Komposition “Piano Phase” für zwei Balafone.
