URBAN FEMINISM Strike a Rock | Tanz im August | HAU Hebbel am Ufer (HAU3)

Production Details / Press Releases

to be imprinted, to imprint. to be regarded, to look at. to be patterned, to pattern. to be disturbed, to disturb. to be enclosed, to close. to be described, to write abstracts real experiences that are forgotten behind closed doors. Viola Luise Barner and Malika Lamwersiek seek a dance expression of how patriarchal family structures are perpetuated through violent manners.

For the third and final year in the ongoing project URBAN FEMINISM, the ten young Berlin-based urban dance-makers selected by Tanz im August present three explosive collaborations at HAU3. Following a series of intensive workshops and mentored rehearsals focusing on lighting design and dance dramaturgy, the female artists merge hip hop, breaking, popping, krump and house among others in a unique evening that marks the grande finale of the programme.

Malika Lamwersiek is a dancer specialised in the street dance styles hip hop, house and popping. Her main interest lies in the body’s relationship to the music and the narration of invented stories during improvisation. Since 2013, she has travelled to various countries to exchange with other hip hop artists and to research the history of Afro diasporic dance styles and their societal context. As an active part of the urban dance community in Berlin, Malika Lamwersiek and the Walashé collective organise jams, battles and classes. As a performer and dancer, she was part of the theatre piece “Roots” in Cologne and the internationally touring dance piece “Diana, Even” by Kat Válastur.

Viola Luise Barner is a dancer and choreographer. As a bgirl with many different creative influences, her focus lies on dynamic floor work, improvisation and partnering. She holds a degree in dance from the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil and was repeatedly a resident artist at PACT Zollverein and tanzhaus nrw. As an artistic educator, her philosophy is to promote the potential of each individual and to pass on cultural practices.
