Cabdance

HAU Hebbel am Ufer (HAU1)

Production Details / Press Releases

In “Cabdance,” choreographers Kadir “Amigo” Memis and Jecko Siompo experiment with dancing in a restricted space. The contrast of the living conditions in their respective places of residence, Berlin and Jakarta, forms the starting point from which to examine the spatial as well as mental limits of human cohabitation. Indonesia’s capital is the epitome of congestion and gridlock, and stands in stark contrast to the sense of freedom and prosperity common to Europeans. In “Cabdance,” modern dance styles meet traditional dances from Turkish and Indonesian culture, creating new patterns of movement. Like the inhabitants of their cities, the dancers struggle with the fear of getting hassled, at the same time longing for exchange and communality.

Through the window of a cab “In Jakarta, the choreographers Kadir “Amigo” Memis and Jecko Siompo get stuck in a traffic jam. As they are waiting for the traffic to flow again, they observe throught the windows of their cab an impressing choreography of vehicles, people and animals. Out of this situation the idea for “Cabdance” was born. Four weeks the two choreographers worked separately on dance sketches which they used for the creation of their collaborative piece that they have now created in Berlin. In this piece the dancers rush like human animals through the jungle of the city that is sometimes dense, sometime clear.” Jochen Roller
