Production Details / Press Releases

‘Code’ uses dance and sound to create a new sensory language. The collaboration between Katherine Leung and percussionist Petros Tzekos, draws inspiration from morse-code, braille and ASL. The basis of the piece explores the development of language from its most simplistic forms ‘action’ to ‘reaction’ running alongside the theme of censorship, echoing the characteristics of morse-code.

‘Code’ premiered as part of ‘Reinkommen on Screen’ as a research project in Oct 2020. Supported by ada Studio and funded by Berlin Senate Department of Culture und Europe.

Katherine Leung is a dance artist of mixed Scottish and Chinese descent, born in Glasgow UK. With her background in theatre and dance, she completed her Master’s in Performance Design and Practice at Central Saint Martins and her Bachelor’s in Performing Arts at London Metropolitan University. She has since made independent works and has devised original productions collaboratively with artists across various disciplines, working in UK, Germany, Greece & Italy. She currently continues to find inspiration in collaborations, exploring the role of the moving body in different forms of performative art.

Petros Tzekos is a Greek percussionist, sound maker and improviser currently living in Berlin. He is redefining percussion as a source, treating them with extended techniques with his focus in sound art, improvisation, experimental, contemporary free music & jazz. He studied modern and classical percussion in Athens and his curiosity brought him on a search for new ways of playing music, bringing him on trips to Japan and Morocco in pursuit of learning contemporary, ritual music and drumming. He is currently working as a composer on his first album “Apathetic”, a combination of minimalism and ritual.

The soundance festival berlin presents joint projects by dancers, choreographers, musicians and composers from the Berlin independent scene and invites international guest artists. As a stimulus for dialogue between the various disciplines, the festival presents a broad spectrum of artistic styles, from contemporary dance to real-time music, from Post Butoh to New Jazz and improvisation – analog and electronic. Across generations, diverse works and formats between sound and movement will be experienced by audiences in theater and urban space.
