Production Details / Press Releases
In 2016 the performer, choreographer and filmmaker James Batchelor accompanied a twomonth research expedition to the Antarctic McDonald Islands. “Deepspace” is an artistic response to this journey, in which Batchelor combines dance, sound and installation. With the performer Chloe Chignell and the musician Morgan Hickinbotham he creates a hypnotic, intimate performance that examines our curiosity about the unknown. Playing at the threshold of art and science, the body is taken to the extremes of remoteness and closeness, connectedness and isolation, security and insecurity.
James Batchelor is a prize-winning choreographer and dancer from Australia. His mission as an artist is to make work that inspires curiosity, shifts expectations, expands awareness and creates possibilities. He aspires to finding new ways to make dance into a conversation, a collaboration and an interchange. Batchelor studied dance at the Victorian College of the Arts. Since 2012 he has been commissioned by Chunky Move (“Redshift”), Dance Massive (“Deepspace”), Dancehouse (“Island”), the Keir Choreographic Award (“Metasystems”, “Inhabited Geometries”) and the National Portrait Gallery of Australia (“Smooth Translation”). His choreographies have been seen in Paris, Versailles, Luxemburg, Bassano del Grappa, Chongqing, Bangkok and elsewhere. In 2016 he was resident artist on the Australian marine-research ship RV Investigator, which travelled to sub-Arctic areas and the McDonald Islands. As a performer he has worked with Iván Pérez, Anouk van Dijk (Chunky Move), Antony Hamilton, Prue Lang, Stephanie Lake, Sue Healey and others. james-batchelor.com.au
