Stable balance? Doesn’t exist in the physical universe – the natural law of entropy always introduces chaos into order. The choreographer Lee Jaeyoung is interested in these transitions from order into chaos and realignment in a social sense as well: In “Equilibrium” two dancers test out their potential for conflict and compromise. They approach one another threateningly, exchange looks of contempt, mechanically lock arms in a fight for superiority, then fall out of these robot-like movements into a stylised battle and a synchronised choreography, before the showdown begins again. Inspired by the sci-fi film “Equilibrium”, in which a totalitarian regime punishes art and emotion, and Jeremy Rifkin’s book on entropy, Lee Jaeyoung and his company SIGA explore how conflict becomes cooperation. “Equilibrium” was premiered at the SIDance Festival in Seoul and is being shown in Europe for the first time.
Lee Jaeyoung studied dance and choreography at Seoul Institute of the Arts and Hansung University and received the Best Choreography award from Seoul Dance Collection, Seoul Performing Arts Festival and was selected as Best Rookie choreographer from Contemporary Dance Association of Korea in 2009. As one of the dancers who has the ability of vigorous expression and dance techniques, he has steadily developed his career and expanded his activities in both the local and international field. Lee Jaeyoung is interested in making movement which is accentuating unique body texture and working in collaboration with other artists from theatre, music and mime, etc. Company SIGA, founded in 2013, is trying to expand the area of contemporary dance through the experimental and challenging combination of other disciplines with dance.
