How can you stage somebody else’s story? How can you narrate something that doesn’t correspond to your own experience? In this touching work, Finnish choreographer Sanna Kekäläinen, together with the performer Maija Karhunen, tells the story of her longtime friend Hafed. Born in Algeria, he now lives in Paris, sans papiers. “Hafed Collage of Differences and Fragility” is an attempt to conjure palpable traces of his corporeality. For this choreographer, with her acute political sensitivity, it is also a quest for the bodily differences that separate us, and the fragility that unites us.
K&C Kekäläinen & Company stand for a form of dance which functions as an intellectual discipline, with the power to communicate poetically and politically. Finnish choreographer Sanna Kekäläinen expands dance by combining philosophy, feminism, texts, gender theory and conceptual thought in her highly distinctive idiom. Kekäläinen studied at the London School of Contemporary Dance and co-founded Zodiak – Center for New Dance, Helsinki. Her own company, K&C Kekäläinen & Company, has been in operation at the Physical Art Theatre since 1996. Her works have been performed in many countries, including France, Mexico, Germany, Italy and the USA. kekalainencompany.net
