Mellizo Doble

Tanz im August | Haus der Berliner Festspiele

Production Details / Press Releases

Spanish dancer Israel Galván and musician Niño de Elche, two of flamenco’s biggest stars, meet again. De Elche sings, Galván dances: with “Mellizo Doble” (which translates as “Twin Double”) the two virtuosos bring their energetic collaboration to a strippeddown stage. Their complex rhythms shapeshift from dynamic highs into mellow lows, scintillating the senses with new sounds and songs. Galván and de Elche craft a percussive physical concert that reinvents flamenco with passion and heart.

Highly acclaimed Spanish dancer Israel Galván has since 1998 created boundary-breaking productions that revolutionise flamenco. The son of two flamenco dancers, he is known for fusing his virtuosity as a performer and traditional flamenco with other modes of expression from Spanish culture, such as bullfighting, football, political activism and cross-dressing. His genre-defying productions tour worldwide and he has been awarded the Premio Nacional de Danza (ES) prize, the New York Bessie Performance Award (US) and the National Dance Award for Exceptional Artistry (UK). In 2016 he was promoted to the rank of Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. Israel Galván is also featured in a Netflix docuseries about dance called “Move”.

Niño de Elche is a Spanish singer, guitarist, film composer and multidisciplinary artist. His performances mix flamenco with antimilitarist, anarchist, queer and transgender elements and have toured to international acclaim. He often collaborates with artists from different disciplines, such as visual artist Pedro G. Romero, the audio-visual collective Los Voluble, choreographer Stéphanie Fuster, musician Kiko Veneno and singer Rocío Márquez. In 2017 he collaborated with Israel Galván and Pedro G. Romero on “La Farsa Romea”. This work, presented at documenta 14, formed the base for “Coplas Mecánicas” and later for “Mellizo Doble”.
