High jumps, headspins, somersaults, fast kicks and whirling turns: with his 10-person crew Grupo de Rua, Brazilian choreographer Bruno Beltrão combines breaking, hip hop and contemporary dance. With a keen eye for composition, Beltrão addresses the turbulent political status of Brazil. In “New Creation” he brings his country’s urgent conflict and violent social contradictions to the stage through an athletic vocabulary of the urban, imbued with explosive expression and freewheeling virtuosity.
Brazilian choreographer Bruno Beltrão has since 1996 been devising performances that combine street dance, breakdance and hip hop with contemporary dance. At the same time highly physical and analytical, his influential choreographies question the established, masculine movement structures and stereotypes of hip hop. His company Grupo de Rua has been touring internationally since 2002, the same year the group was first invited to Tanz im August. Beltrão was awarded New York’s prestigious Bessie award for “H3” (2010) and for his recent production “Inoah” (2020).
