Mal Pelo

The Fifth Winter

Tanz im August | HAU Hebbel am Ufer (HAU1)

Production Details / Press Releases

Two people wait for another winter to pass. They roam around the emptied stage, trapped in a space between deep silence and the voices of their memories, and distract themselves. In “The Fifth Winter” the duo Mal Pelo, which has been working together since 1989, reflects on the pas sing of time and the boundaries of our own terrain. Maria Muñoz and Pep Ramis were inspired by the work of the Italian poet Erri de Luca – and transform their duet itself into a lucid choreographic poem that is both tender and powerful.

María Muñoz grew up in Valencia, where she studied music and also began to dance. She extended her training in Amsterdam and Barcelona and gained her first professional experience with the Japanese company Shusaku & Dormu Dance Theater. In 1985 she founded the group La Dux with Maria Antònia Oliver. In 1988 she developed the solo “Cuarto trastero” with Pep Ramis, and established the company Mal Pelo with him in the following year. Muñoz recently became choreographer, dancer and artistic codirector of the centre L’animal a l’esquena in Celrà, Girona.

Pep Ramis was born in Mallorca into a family of art and musiclovers. He studied cello, pup petry and singing. His interest in performance began in 1985, when he discovered that it united his previous experiences, with the body at its centre. In 1986 he worked with La Dux; in 1987 he took part in Adriana Borriello’s “Scirocco”; in 1989 he founded the company Mal Pelo with María Muñoz. Today he works as a director, performer and artistic codirector of the centre L’animal a l’esquena in Celrà, Girona.
