Inspired by voguing and ballroom culture, American choreographer Trajal Harrell interprets Keith Jarrett’s famous piano solo. On stage with six phenomenal performers from his newly founded Schauspielhaus Zürich Dance Ensemble, Harrell brings a delicate choreography interwoven with references from modern dance, classical antiquity and butoh. With an intro to music by Joni Mitchell, the dancers transform into unusual and autonomous beings who defy their abandonment in moments of sadness, sensuality and struggle.
American choreographer Trajal Harrell gained global recognition with his series “Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at The Judson Church” (2009–2017), which brought together the ballroom dance style and tradition of voguing with postmodern dance. His artistic interests have since extended to Butoh, literature and Ancient Greek tragedies. He tours his works in theatres and exhibition venues worldwide and in 2016 he completed the two-year Annenberg Residency at MoMa, New York. Since 2019 Trajal Harrell is in-house director at Schauspielhaus Zürich. Tanz im August welcomes him back as a regular guest of the festival.
