The Parallel Side of the Road is a spiritual journey exploring the last four years of Akiles’ life while on the move between Damascus, Beirut, Madrid, Istanbul, Antalya, Tbilisi and lastly Berlin.

AKILES is a contemporary dancer and from Iraq. His current work is a projection of his research on ritual contemporary dance of which the first lab We Have to Turn On the Light was performed in Beirut in 2013. His second lab was the premier of a six minute presentation of The Parallel Side of the Road in Berlin. Akiles performed in over twenty works when he was part of Arabia Dance Company including Doha, Bahrain, Damascus and on the historical Roman amphitheater of Busra Asham.

SAAD THAMER, born in Baghdad in 1972, studied Philosophy, Composition Studies and Arab and Western Music Sciences. In 2000, Thamer came to Germany to continue his education with the composer Wolfgang Hamm and Chao Ming Tung. His recent work includes The Explanation of Some Things commissioned by Kunststiftung NRW.

SONJA AUGART studied in the Netherlands and works as an independent artist, dramaturge and curator, e.g. for the Theatre Frascati Amsterdam and the Incubate Festival Tilburg. She also mentored the SODA Master at HZT. In 2003 she established Fragmenta, a dance projects association. Recently she is involved in the Feedback Lab goes public: Let’s Talk about Dance at Tanztage Berlin 2017.

YOANN TRELLU started working with live projections in Nantes, France, in 1999. Since moving to Berlin in 2003, he works as a freelancer for dance and theater companies as well as with musicians. He created works for Posttheater, Jess Curtis/Gravity, Claire Cunningham, Ten Pen Chii, Tatraum and Konzert Theater Bern.

Video Documentation

The video documentation is produced on behalf of the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion. The purpose of this contract is to document productions in the field of contemporary dance in Berlin. The master recordings are archived by the University Library of the Berlin University of Arts. Copies of the recordings on DVD are available for viewing exclusively in the reference collections of the following archives (at media desks in these institutions):
