What does a gesture imply? How does the meaning of a movement unfold? In his precise choreographies Noé Soulier anatomises individual elements of movement and reduces them to their essence. He connects the philosophical and the artistic, and examines the relationship between movement and thought. In his new production, “The Waves,” the French choreographer and trained philosopher assumes that we associate complex experiences with physical movements and postures, and develops a vocabulary of gestures that activates the body’s own memory.
Noé Soulier (*1987, Paris) studied dance at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, the National Ballet School of Canada and at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels. In 2013 he graduated from the Sorbonne with an MA in philosophy. He took part in a residence programme at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris from 2011–12. His work is often described as highly reflective, and frequently combines different interests. So in his lecture performance “Idéographie” Soulier analysed both the language of dance and the canonical philosophic discourse, and in “Movement on movement” he explored the way in which we speak through movement and generate movement through discourse. “Idéographie” was shown at Tanz im August in 2011.
