Production Details / Press Releases
Perhaps the placement of each orange object is a pinning down of a passing impulse, a material doodle that marks a moment in time, an effort to capture the ephemeral. Perhaps they are evidence of some mental residue soon to be burned, released, let go, drawn up by the fire that purifies. Perhaps they are for fun, for play, for humor. Perhaps they are in conversation with the geometricity and angularity of the body’s spontaneous movement, and with the specificity and attempted precision of language and thought. Perhaps they are completely inconsequential, meaningless manipulations, immaterial interactions, and in being so, reveal a paradoxical tension between the ordinariness of daily physical objects and the compelling, gnawing quality of inner feelings eager to be seen, heard, and understood.

THIS IS HOW I FEEL TODAY is a performance that investigates how to make sense of the never-ending impulses that run through our heads, our everyday moments, and our contradictory experiences. The work is a personal peeling back of layers of privileges, complicity, convictions, and values. Juxtaposing the personal, political, and philosophical dimensions of the individual experience, Chande examines the intersection of mundane materiality and conscious ephemerality. The work’s physicality is improvisation-based and bharatanatyam-rooted.
ANJAL CHANDE was recently a U.S. Fulbright Fellow and guest student at TU’s Metropolitan Studies program and HZT’s SoDA program. She has a degree in Food Politics and Sociology from NYU and is the founder of Soham Dance Space in Chicago. anjalchande.com
