Sergiu Matis

Warp Renderings

FEMINIST FUTURES WEEKEND | Tanzfabrik Berlin / Wedding

Production Details / Press Releases

In this new solo work, Sergiu Matis explores how aestheticised images of landscapes have distorted contemporary society’s relationship to the natural world – from European landscape painting traditions to photography, satellite imagery, CGI and virtual reality.

«Warp Renderings» proposes different ways to access the natural environment, by revisiting and investigating the ideological twists that it has been subjected to in the past. These distortions are exaggerated to the point of rupture, cracking and warping the canvas and the screen, and creating fissures in the body, making it permeable and able to resonate with the natural elements it represents.

Perhaps through this breaking of traditions – this conceptual vandalism – we can repair and restore our connection with nature, allowing it to spill back at us, or at least, back into the dancing body.

Sergiu Matis (he/him) is a Romanian choreographer living in Berlin since 2008. He has created dance performances such as «Neverendings» (2017), «Hopeless.» (2019), «Extinction Room» (2019), «UNREST» (2021), «DRANG» (2022) and «Blazing Worlds» (2023). His work has been presented at festivals throughout Europe. Matis´ dance practice can be understood as a tireless search through physical and digitalised archives. His performances provoke intense experiences that break with expectations and strive towards a new understanding of dance.
