»Strictly speaking I believe I’ve never been anywhere«, murmelt Deborah Hay mit dem Akzent der US-Südstaaten.

»If I can manage my perception of time and space to inform my body, then I do not have to think about what movement to do next. What I mean by my perception of time is that it is passing. And what I mean by my perception of space is that I include it in my dancing so that I am not seduced by the intelligence, past experiences, patterns, limitations and /or sensuality of my moving body.« (Deborah Hay)

Deborah Hay was born 1941 in Brooklyn and now lives in Austin, Texas. Her mother was her first dance teacher, and directed her training until she was a teenager. She moved to Manhattan in the 1960s, where she continued her training with Merce Cunningham and Mia Slavenska. In 1964, Hay danced with the Cunningham Dance Company during a 6-month tour through Europe and Asia. Hay was one the founding members of the Judson Dance Theatre in New York and is acknowledged by critics and historians as one of the most relevant and influential choreographers of experimental dance today. In 1970 she left New York to live in a community in northern Vermont. Soon, she distanced herself from the performing arena, producing »Ten Circle Dances«, performed on 10 consecutive nights within a single community and no audience whatsoever. Thus began a long period of reflection about how dance is transmitted and presented. Since the late 1970s, Hay has mainly been focussing on solo works. Her books include »Lamb at The Altar: The Story of a Dance« (Duke University Press, 1994) and »My Body, the Buddhist« (Wesleyan University Press, 2000), now in its third printing. In 2004 she received a NYC Bessie award for her choreography of the quartet »The Match«. The Festival d’Automne, in Paris, presented »The Match« in 2005, »O, O« in 2006, and »If I Sing To You«, in 2008, which was com-missioned by The Forsythe Company and which toured extensively in Europe and Australia. In October 2009 the Theater Academy in Helsinki, Finland, conferred on Hay an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Dance. In 2010 she became a USA Friends Fellow in Dance, and in 2011 she received a grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts in New York City. Last April, Deborah Hay became one of the 21 American performing artists to receive the groundbreaking 2012 Doris Duke Artist Award during its inaugural year.
