Production Details / Press Releases
After more than 30 years as a dancer and a choreographer, Marcelo Evelin began to ask himself: what can dance (still) do? In his new work “Dança Doente” (Sick Dance) the Brazilian takes up the writings, images, and dance of Tatsumi Hijikata, known as the founder of butoh. Evelin is interested in Hijikata’s ambiguous ideas and radical suggestions. He seeks a dance that is infectious in both senses of the word, and that conceals a premonition of death. After all, Hijikata described the dancer as an upright corpse, and butoh as a “dance of darkness”.
Marcelo Evelin is a Brazilian choreographer, researcher and performer. From 1986 until 2006 he lived in Amsterdam, where he collaborated with artists from a range of disciplines, creating not just projects for the stage, but also films, installations, music and site-specific works. In 2016 he opened in Teresina CAMPO, a new venue to think, practice and disseminate art and related disciplines, and as part of the studio Demolition Incorporada. Today he divides his time between Europe and his home city of Teresina. With his company Demolition Incorporada, he was artist in residence at the Hetveem Theater in Amsterdam, and has performed at festivals across the globe. In 2015, he showed “Suddenly Everywhere is Black With People” at Tanz im August. Marcelo Evelin teaches subjects such as improvisation and composition at the Amsterdam School for the Arts. demolitionincorporada.com
