Production Details / Press Releases

Art or artifice? Beauty or optical illusion? In dialogue with the electronic live-sound of musician Korhan Erel, Léonard Engel transposes ani-mal behaviors like mimicry or highly codified mating rituals to the human anatomy. By doing so, he exposes their abstract qualities and sets them in relation with the Pavane (from the Spanish pavón, peacock), a processional dance from the Renaissance in which the participants display their lustrous attire. His performance opens new perspectives on the artistic value of animal dances, while creating a new masculinity that tries to seduce through dance, glitter and hypnotic movement, far from a normative display of strength.

Léonard Engel is an ex-soloist of the Bavarian State Ballet (Munich) and has been working as a freelance artist since 2016 with choreographers and companies such as Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Gintersdorfer/Klaßen, Richard Siegal, Paula Rosolen and Laurent Chétouane. In January 2019, Engel presented “Pavane”, his first choreographic work, at the Tanztage Berlin in the Sophiensælen. In September 2019, he created “How to get rid of a body. A magic manual” at HochX Theatre (Munich). In 2021 he will realise a short film project around this last piece, as well as a new project inspired by different revolving dances.
