Anna Nowicka

Production Details / Press Releases

In THIS IS THE REAL THING (VR), a dancer traverses multiple layers of realities: a body that flickers, shimmers, constantly multiplying itself. A body that allows the multiplicity of its possibilities in manifold realities to appear.

The piece originates in the choreographic work This Is The Real Thing, premiered in 2018 at Nowy Theatre in Warsaw, Poland. It attentively gazes at the movement material transforming it into a VR installation as well as a new stage performance. This new two-folded work continues the investigation of the audience’s gaze and imagination in focusing on the cinematic aspects of Anna Nowicka’s practice. In collaboration with filmmaker Stella Horta, Anna is moving away from capturing or shooting an image towards the possible tenderness of imaging and being present as a performer and observer. In the synchronicity of seeing and be- ing seen, of what is tangible and imagined, a third, shared space unravels, where these dichotomies fall open.

Anna Nowicka is a Berlin based choreographer working with dreams and embodied imagination. Graduate of the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD), MA Choreography at the HfS Ernst-Busch / HZT in Berlin and MA Psychology at the Warsaw University, she wrote her practice based PhD on embodied awareness as the foundation for being present at the Polish Film School in Łódź. She is a certified Saphire® teacher of Dr. Catherine Shainberg’s “The School of Images”, developing her own choreographic language based on the work’ s principles.

Jasmine Guffond is an artist and composer working at the interface of social, political and technical infrastructures. Focused on electronic composition across music and art contexts her practice spans live performance, recording, installation and custom made browser add-on. She has also released solo records with the Sonic Pieces, Karl Records and Editions Mego labels.

Aleksandr Prowaliński is polish and belarussian multidisciplinary artist. He’s an author of numerous lighting projects (for theater, opera and performance), as well as paintings, and graphics. Regardless which medium he chooses, Prowaliński is focused on making a deep and long lasting emotional impact on a viewer.

Stella Horta is a video artist and filmmaker based in Berlin. Stella works with more-than-human perspectives and somatic research to create films, video sculptures, and live video. Her work is shown in galleries, theaters, and cinemas.
